Africa’s 100 Best Books of the 20 th Century); Push-Push and Other Stories and Awam Ngqo; 4 novels-
Mother to Mother, Beauty’s Gift – shortlisted for the 2009 Commonwealth Writers’ Prize Best Book
Africa Region, Life is a Hard but beautiful Thing, and Chasing the Tails of My Father’s Cattle. Mother to
mother has been translated to Italian and Japanese while To My Children’s Children has been translated
into isiXhosa and German. In the Hesse district of Germany it is required reading for the high school
diploma while, in South Africa, as of 2015, Mother to Mother is prescribed for grade 10 learners –
mother tongue. Magona has also published more than 120 children’s books, most translated into all the
official South African languages.
